Separate earth wire on cooker circuit

I have been repositioning a cooker switch and encountered a separate earth wire in its own conduit running
down and wired into the cooker socket alongside the supply earth. What is the reasoning behind this? Thanks.

    Could be several reasons.

One could be a damaged or broken CPC from switch , you need to earth loop impedance test with the original CPC in the cable to see whats going on

Someone may have needs an earth elsewhere and borrowed the most convenient

Perhaps someone thought bonding was required?

Yeah, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case!

Older sparks used to often run a 6mm earth cable with 6mm T+E, particularly when supplying showers. No idea why, it was never a requirement as far as I am aware. Supplementary bonding became a requirement in bath/shower rooms, but never cookers!

If you have a steel sink it may have been to bond that during the 80s bonding pandemic

    Bonding "pandemic" is accurate!

My first job at 16 was in a local pub. Every metal item in the whole kitchen had been bonded! Was a bloody nightmare trying to move the stainless steel tables to clean while they were tethered with a bit of green and yellow!

We were sent to bond display cases at a museum, they were constructed out of box section with plastic insert joints would have needed about 20 links per case, the "engineer" changed his mind when it was pointed out

If the lighting circuits were installed without an earth wire it may have been an earth for a fluorescent light fitting in the kitchen.
